Navigating the Excellence Tax™

An 8-week programme for Black and Global Majority professionals. Move from recognising the pressure to protecting your wellbeing, strengthening your position and deciding what comes next.

Recognise→Protect→Position→Decide→Build

Each module combines evidence, career strategy, practical application and trauma-informed nervous-system practices.

WEEK 01

Understand Your Excellence TaxRecognise the pattern

+

Before you change the pattern, you need to see it clearly. Identify where the Excellence Tax shows up in your working life and understand the difference between ordinary workplace pressure and the additional pressure created by continual proving, identity management and barriers to progression.

Lessons
  • Understanding the Excellence Tax™
  • Ordinary versus racialised workplace pressure
  • Survival Tax
  • Performance Tax
  • Progression Tax
  • Identifying your dominant tax
  • Mapping your triggers and baseline
You will leave with your personal Excellence Tax profile and a clearer understanding of what work is costing you beyond your formal job description.
WEEK 02

RegulateUnderstand what workplace pressure is doing to your body

+

The Excellence Tax is carried psychologically and physically. This module introduces the connection between workplace experiences, nervous-system activation and the behaviours that often follow. You will learn to recognise what happens between a workplace trigger and your response.

Lessons
  • Sustained workplace activation
  • Recognising your stress signals
  • The workplace nervous-system map
  • Triggers, thoughts, body responses and behaviours
  • Creating space before reacting
  • Short regulation practices for the working day
You will leave with a personal map of how pressure shows up in your body and practical ways to respond before pressure drives your decisions.
WEEK 03

Protect Your Health and EnergyReduce the personal cost of work

+

Protection is not about becoming less ambitious. It means reducing the amount of yourself you sacrifice to remain effective. Examine where work is consuming more health, time and emotional energy than you want to give.

Lessons
  • Capacity and energy
  • Boundaries as protection
  • Recognising invisible overwork
  • Perfection pressure and over-preparation
  • Recovery planning
  • Burnout and sustainable pacing
  • Deciding what you will no longer absorb
You will leave with a personal protection strategy for your health, energy and working capacity.
WEEK 04

Protect Your VoiceDecide what requires a response

+

Not every workplace problem requires the same response. Become more deliberate about when to speak, document, challenge, escalate or strategically disengage — moving away from automatic reactions and towards informed action.

Lessons
  • Recognising when something requires action
  • Protecting your voice without carrying every battle
  • Documenting workplace experiences
  • Difficult conversations
  • Challenge and escalation
  • Choosing when to disengage
  • Protecting yourself during disputes
You will leave with a clearer framework for deciding when and how to respond to difficult workplace situations.
WEEK 05

PositionMove from performance to career position

+

Doing excellent work does not automatically create progression. Examine the difference between delivering work and building the relationships, visibility and career capital that influence opportunity.

Lessons
  • Performance versus position
  • Sponsorship and visibility
  • The unseen politics of organisations
  • Identifying decision-makers
  • Relationships beyond your team
  • Executive presence
  • Personal brand
  • Becoming known beyond your job description
You will leave with a positioning strategy designed to turn strong performance into stronger career leverage.
WEEK 06

Strengthen Your LeverageReduce your dependence on one employer

+

Career security does not come only from keeping your current job. It also comes from the options you build around yourself. Strengthen the assets, relationships and opportunities you carry with you between roles.

Lessons
  • Building career capital
  • Strengthening your network
  • Salary and negotiation
  • Sponsorship
  • External visibility
  • Board and leadership opportunities
  • Financial resilience
  • Additional sources of leverage
You will leave with a practical leverage plan for increasing your options and reducing career dependency.
WEEK 07

DecideStay, challenge, reposition or leave

+

Career decisions made from exhaustion often look different from decisions made with evidence. Assess your current situation and decide what needs to change. Leaving is one option. It is not the only option.

Lessons
  • Assessing the evidence around your role
  • Changes in organisational relationships
  • Staying versus leaving
  • Challenging your current conditions
  • Moving teams or organisations
  • Changing sectors
  • Redundancy and return to work
  • Portfolio careers and transitions
You will leave with a structured decision about your next career move and the evidence supporting it.
WEEK 08

BuildCreate what comes next

+

The final module moves beyond responding to your current workplace. Begin building the career, income and professional life you want to own — whether that means progressing inside employment, senior leadership, joining a board, a portfolio career, consulting, building a business or creating several income streams.

Lessons
  • Defining what ownership means for you
  • Leadership and board careers
  • Consultancy and entrepreneurship
  • Multiple income streams
  • Wealth building
  • Reducing long-term career dependency
  • Your next 12 months on the Protection Pathway
You will leave with your personal 12-Month Career Strategy, setting out what you will protect, strengthen, change and build next.
